HANGUANG JUN
who goes where the chaos is

PERSONALITY
lan wangji has layers. these layers are pretty simple and straightforward: rules, justice, and wei wuxian, all surrounding the bedrock that is lan wangji's incredible stubbornness. let's start with the foundations: stubbornness. focus. diligence. for the first six years of his life, lan wangji was allowed to see his mother once a month and did his best to be good so he could go and see her. at six, his mother died, and he still went and kneeled in front of her house for hours in the snow, waiting for her door to open, just for the chance to see her. this stubbornness stayed with him over the years, serving a useful purpose. he was one of the best students in his clan, stubbornly working at every task put in front of him, whether it be perfecting his calligraphy, memorizing his clan rules, cultivating his golden core, or learning how to fight. he manages to stay (mostly) focused through weeks of overseeing the punishment of one of his fellow disciples, despite how much pestering said disciple - wei wuxian - did, even when Wei Wuxian went as far as to rudely call him by his personal name and slip porn into his poetry. he walked on a broken leg rather than let someone carry him, he persisted in trying to convince wei wuxian to give up demonic cultivation, he fought elders in an attempt to keep them from wrecking wei wuxian's home (after his death), and accepted a pretty shitty punishment (300 lashes with bamboo poles and three years seclusion) for that.

this stubbornness is frustrating to others, but lan wangji doesn't really care. he never had friends— his older brother was the closest person to him, and he never really saw the need for friends, taking to heart the idea that people and relationships are a distraction from walking the right path. lan wangji cares about justice and doing the right thing and genuinely wants to help people, despite his reluctance to actually be involved with people. "I, Lan Wangji, wish to curb the violent and assist the weak," is a vow he makes at 15-16. ultimately, that's what he circles around - despite his quiet, private attitude, he wants to help. he doesn't want violence, or for violent people, to succeed. his clan has rules about non-violence, and he believes in them, but he goes to war (with four of the other major sects and a number of smaller ones) in order to curb the violent, power-hungry machinations of the then acting chief cultivator, who wanted to control the world.

as mentioned, his clan has rules. over three thousand! lan wangji knows them and studies them and believes in them. he believes in them fiercely, to a fault when the audience first meets him, relentless and dogged about them and people following them. he's lawful good on an alignment chart and firmly believes rules serve a very good purpose, even as he starts to question them; he grows from believing in black and white principles to understanding shades of grey exist. he starts to question significant rules, especially things like "do not befriend evil" and "uphold good" when he's confronted with the fact that the world he lives in is incredibly unjust - another clan uses prisoners of war as archery targets, which is horrific to him, and he watches as power-hungry people try to amass even more power. he listens as rumors spring up and he starts to question what is truth. his sense of justice shifts from following these rules without question— which, it should be noted with some amusement, are carved on a stone— to questioning and seeking the truth behind rumors and not allowing his passions to get the best of him. which he's very good at doing, used to keeping his emotions repressed and acting with logic, except when it comes to the one friend he has: wei wuxian.

up until wei wuxian's dramatic entrance at cloud recesses, lan wangji's home, lan wangji had no friends. was perfect fine being alone. then this loud-mouthed man barrels into his life, and changes that. lan wangji dislikes him at first, but wei wuxian is persistent and opens up lan wangji to the idea that being alone isn't always everything it's cracked up to be. from simple questions and answers in class to questioning the the way one clan treats prisoners of war, people who are largely elderly or infirm, wei wuxian highlights problems and exposes lan wangji to ideas outside of the rules he follows, ideas that make him think deeply about justice and start him down the process of learning to question things.

that makes him sound pretty simple, but there's more going on between those layers. he's got a resting bitch face and keeps an incredibly neutral expression. he's not proud, but he has pride and he is very private and having people study him and know him is something he doesn't care for. being seen is a terrible ordeal, okay!! especially since, deep down, he's capable of incredible tenderness and devotion, things that, when the audience meets him, he considers weaknesses but grows to accept. as mentioned above, he was very, very devoted to his mother, doing his best to be good so he could see her and sitting in front of her house for hours, waiting for the door to open. when he gave his friendship to wei wuxian, it was basically irrevocable, even when his friend started to walk an unorthodox path. although pets aren't allowed in his home, he ends up with a pasture full of rabbits that he diligently takes care of, handles them with tenderness and care. he adopts a child, claims him as his own, and even before that, when he first meets the child (wen yuan), he holds the kid and lets him sit in his lap and buys him toys, despite being visibly awkward. he strives to be filial to his uncle and support his brother because, deep down inside, he cares tremendously for his family, worrying about his uncle's health and his brother's disappearance after their home burns down. like, visibly worrying! it's an ordeal.

ABILITIES
A list of generic cultivators abilities that pretty much any cultivator can do:
-fly on swords. Like it’s a hoverboard. They can travel ridiculous distances with it!
-longevity! The more they train their spiritual ability, the longer they live. Technically, cultivators can even cultivate to immortality.
-also they basically stop aging once they reach a certain level of power, so regardless of if they’re immortal or not, they’ll look like they’re 25/35/whatever until they die
-Jump real far. Sort of float. Leap off buildings. Leap on buildings. It's not as cool as Superman but it still looks pretty epic.
-enhanced endurance, enhanced strength, enhanced durability, enhanced speed
-healing over time, not instant but way faster than human
-they can pass each other spiritual energy to help someone heal faster
-extrasensory perception (feeling attacks coming etc)
-heightened/enhanced senses (hearing, sight)
-L’oreal hair
-inedia, aka, the ability to survive without eating. For like. Weeks? Months? Who knows. They must be pretty strong to do this.
-Something to do with their swords??? Like if a cultivator fought another cultivator, their fights are just Extra so they use spiritual energy. And if say a cultivator fought someone without spiritual power with a sword, the person without spiritual power would only last like a couple of minutes no matter how good of a swordsman they are because it doesn’t actually have to do with technique. They can summon their swords and send it off flying like a boomerang.

Lan Wangji specific abilities:
- really insane talent with the sword
- magical musical cultivation skill abilities, which means he can use his guqin to perform the following spells: Inquiry (allows him to communicate with the dead), Clarity/Cleansing (a song to bring clarity to the mind), Chord Assassination (it's not musical, really, but he uses his guqin strings as a garrote), Rest (calms resentful energy), and Sound of Vanquish (vanquishes resentful energy)
- a silencing spell! all Lan sect members can do this (I think???) and it silences people for about 30 minutes
- general musical talent; he plays a guqin (seven-stringed Chinese zither) and has composed his own music
- A face that reveals nothing unless he wants to murder someone, or he's looking at Wei Wuxian, when it reveals everything
- beautiful calligraphy and a lot of book learning
- the ability to wear white after Labor Day and still look good
- the ability to keep those white robes clean. look, he goes trouncing through a forest and they're still pristine, it's a magical ability
